I think they've believed for a long time that great schedules are the big thing
This years home schedule is pretty good with 3 P5 opponents + Boise but the great schedule isn't any fun if BYU can't compete and win.
I returned to Utah in 2015 and I can count more embarrassing losses (UMass, NIU, Utah State) then I can great wins since I got back (Miss St and some fun games vs the likes of Toledo, Cincy, & E Carolina).
Playing in an increasingly empty stadium makes for a pretty lame game day experience too.
