It's not just specific to the Athletic Dept, BYU often thinks people owe them...
...loyalty or service. That's why they try to get professors to come to BYU for less salary by selling it as a pseudo-calling.
Just today I went to the UCCU branch office right by the stadium, and they have signs up that they are moving to a new building in Provo, so I asked if BYU was going to buy the building & land since it's right across the street from LES? The UCCU guy replied that BYU didn't want to pay for it but instead asked them to donate it, so UCCU is selling it to a developer who plans to put up student housing.
