Utah is overrated EVERY year, and this year it’s fully into the range of self-parody.
The only reason that Utah even had a winning record last year is because they were in by far the weakest division of by far the weakest conference in the nation.
All this talk about how tough Utah will be is just bizarre. Creepily bizarre. Didn’t anybody actually watch Utah play last year? There’s no substance apart from a decent defense, and even that was completely unimpressive against good offenses. Kyle Whittingham is essentially a one-trick pony, and his brand of football has pretty much run its course. It’s thoroughly generic, and brutally boring football.
Will Utah beat BYU again this year? Possibly. Most of BYU’s current streak of losses to Utah are just that. BYU losses. Am I saying that Utah didn’t earn their wins? Well, I suppose it depends. If essentially standing idly by and letting your opponent implode counts as “earning” a win, then I guess they earned it.
BYU having a bizarre tendency to fall apart against Utah does not in any way or to any degree mean that Utah is somehow a great team.
