"I have a bread guy." My Venezuela post from May 2017
My wife has put together a number of chatbook albums from our 2 years in Venezuela. It's hard to believe that it's been a year since we left. We miss it dearly. The people, the natural beauty, the incredible weather, and our life. My wife was talking about the situation below and it made me look for the post.

"I haven't seen sandwich bread on a grocery store shelf for over four months. The areas where bread used to be in all three grocery stores I frequent are actually filled with other stuff now so that it doesn't look empty. Folks warned it would happen so we bought a nice bread maker, but the idea of only relying on that seems odd. I also had a ton of bread that I had been hoarding in my freezer and it lasted us for the last 4 months, but now it's gone too.

So I'm aware that grocery store baggers often have connections or are themselves "bachaqueros." which are people who resell price controlled/regulated items for a markup or just a fee. I decide to strike up a conversation with my cashier and bagger and make a big deal about the lack of bread anywhere for the last 4 months. The bagger takes my stuff out to the car, and I keep talking about it. I ask him if he knows anyone who can get bread. He said he didn't know but he'd look into it. I gave him my phone number and let him know that I'm interested if he can find someone. 30 minutes later, he texts me with some pictures of different breads asking what I want and how much. We go back and forth, but in the end we settle on six loaves of multigrain bread. He tells me to come back in the store where he meets me near the front door and we walk to the beer and liquor section in the back where the girl sitting at the register produces six loaves of the pictured bread. The bagger then walks with me over to the pharmacy counter where they check me out to avoid letting other customers see all the bread and cause a stir. I then got the bagger' s bank account info and sent him a tip so I make sure I continue to have access to bread.

This place is crazy."
