It definitely can come across that way. I'm certain that most teams do this. Especially before conference play. I think if BYU started the season playing ISU, NIU, and the likes, they too would hold back plays. It just isn't very possible the way they open with four P5 teams. It's done throughout the year though,so I don't think it was meant as a slight to BYU, it's just sound coaching strategy.
