He needs some time to bulk up at DE
He wasn't as fast as some of the other options at linebacker and needed to make the move to DE. He has some potential there, but is probably 1-2 years and 30 pounds away from being a difference maker at DE. This is a loss, but he isn't patient enough to put in the work and wait his turn.

#BYU redshirt freshman defensive end Hirkley Latu has entered the NCAA's transfer portal.
Latu was a three-star recruit coming out of Kahuku High in Hawaii in the class of 2016.
