involved with football. That is the issue here. It's not about money available. It's not about competing. It's not about importance. It's not about boosters not stepping up. It's not about fans.
It's about the perception of thousands of wards outside the USA (in Bogota, in Ukraine, in Zimbabwe, etc.) wondering why a church they belong to is paying $10M to football coaches every year instead of providing something to benefit them.
But to me the even bigger issue than BYU paying coaches less than market, is the fact that the school and the church don't have enough goodwill/commitment from the best LDS players to get them in the door (because of HCO fear, other fandom, or perceived NFL opportunity). If BYU had the best LDS players from Stanford, USC, and Utah, etc. added to its current best 20 guys, then we would be a perennial top 15 team. Add a Jamaal/Ty'son Williams every few years and you have top 10 teams.
Money for coaches is not going to be solved ever, it's the kids that can solve the problem.
