trying to do with a defense like the one we have at BYU. Not saying everybody has to like the strategy (I'm not exactly sold on it), but it was kind of cool to at least hear his thoughts on what it's trying to accomplish.
In a nutshell (and I'm going to butcher it), it gives you flexibility to rush or drop an LB (obviously) but you can also show an illusion of pressure. We make it look like pressure and put guys on edge but only bring 4. Or we bring 5 but we make sure we keep everything in front of us and not give up the big play. We hope for an errant throw. We also try to give different looks on coverage (inverse coverage) where a safety and a corner might swap their coverage.
It's funny because we did bring 4 quite a bit against Tennessee and it feels like a blitz to viewers at home but it's obviously not really even a blitz. It was easily picked up more often than not. Are you actually fooling any QB into thinking he needs to get the ball out when he sees the 4th guy coming in?
I'd like to hear how it differs from Bronco's scheme (you there Criddle?). I remember Bronco dialing up some really cool disguised blitzes at times but I also remember people complaining about 3rd and long completions, bend but don't break, etc. We also have to remember that Bronco had some incredible playmakers at his disposal - KVN, Ziggy, etc. We don't have that kind of rushing ability now. You could argue that Bronco would've done a lot more with Takitaki.
