Bronco’s wins did not diminish with time.
Bronco had a 10 win season, three 8 win seasons, then a 9 win season in independence. That’s the epitome of consistency, with an average of 8.6 wins/season. In the MWC, Bronco won 6, 11, 11, 10, 11, and 7 games. Higher ceiling than independence, but also a lower floor, with the average coming out to 9.3 wins per season. That’s less than a one win drop in the independence era, despite harder schedules and significant QB injuries. If Riley Nelson stayed healthy, 2012 could have been a 10 win season. If Taysom Hill had stayed healthy BYU easily would have had 10+ win seasons in 14 and 15, which would have been enough for BYU to finish ranked in the top 25. But I digress.

In the end, some BYU fans who don’t pay attention to college football convinced themselves that any coach could do what Bronco did and couldn’t wait to be rid of him for superficial reasons.

I would love to see Kalani grow, but he has a lot to prove still to show significant growth. The 2017 season was inexcusable and never would have happened under Bronco. Kalani had the coaching luxury of taking over a locker room that had a winning culture based off of hard work and discipline. Most coaches do not have that. All Kalani needed to do was some minor tweaking, but instead he made practices easier than the baseball team and let the program become soft under his watch.

Back to back losses to USU? Never beaten Boise State? CBers would have been howling for Bronco to be fired before even stepping foot on the bus. The double standard is comical, yet exists because Kalani has a more likable personality, as if that matters in a world where the best football coaches are guys like Bill Belichik and Nick Saban. Last year BYU beat 2 P5 teams early and still finished only 7-6, a bad season by Bronco’s standards. So forgive some of us if we’re waiting to see if this year will be different rather than spiking the football that Kalani and Co. have arrived. It’s going to take multiple seasons for Kalani to prove that he’s grown to Bronco’s level, let alone surpass him.
