I don't think it was...
...we've had terrible ball spots in recent games, like Tennessee last week. On this play the refs pretty much spotted the ball where it was downed, it was just unfortunate that we were an inch short. It's not like they shorted us a yard on the spot. Replays showed that Dayan got to the 8 yd line and that's where they spotted the ball.

I can see trying this play 3 times in a row when the D knows what we're going to do if we're playing a group of 5 school and we can over power their DL but we're going up against USC who puts a lot of DL's and LB's into the NFL and are equally big and strong (if not more so) than we are up front.

This play works because of the element of surprise and catching the D off-guard and unprepared. The confusion of "WTHeck is BYU doing???" causes a moment of hesitation on their part and allows us a window. But as we saw once they know what it is and sub for it, it's not magical anymore. It was dumb on our part to keep trying it over and over.
