It can be an important factor.
Not simply for the unis and gear themselves, but for the "cool" and "upscale" vibe that it gives the program. I was certainly never good enough to be a targeted recruit, but even as a benchwarmer I took recruits around during their visits multiple times. We would typically do a blackout uniform and a royal-based uniform as alternates each season, and recruits loved it. On visits they very frequently asked about our practice uniforms, gear and equipment, game day uniforms (we had several looks), and things like that. Because we had great stuff (top notch Nike gear, clean looks and designs, and alternates) it contributed to their really good feelings about our overall program. Fans watch you play, girls watch you play - recruits do want to look good and look cool, and unis and gear can do that.

While I think recruits look at the big picture, uniforms and gear are a part of the totality they consider, and it never hurts. I know one recruit in particular that probably had gear, style, and uniforms as #3 on his personal list, while for another it was probably #10. Everyone is different on what's important in a school to them, but it never hurts when you show a recruit your gear, equipment, and uniforms, and they say "Man, that's dope."
