This Saturday might be the last BYU game my dad attends in person
He's getting up there and mobility is starting to be very difficult for him.

It's sort of fitting that they're doing the 1960's throwback theming because both of my parents attended BYU in that decade and they're both traveling up from Cedar City to watch the game (I'm planning to come down from SLC to watch it with them).

My dad, while not an athlete, was instrumental in getting the bronze cougar we now see outside the southwest gates of the stadium. It was a gift to the university from his graduating class and he likes to tell the story of how he went up to visit Avard Fairbanks, who was then teaching at the University of Utah, and got him to agree to make the sculpture for BYU. He then helped bring the sculpture down to Provo (and was in the truck when the first presented it to the university during a football game - back then, there was a track inside the stadium that went around the football field and they drove the truck, with the bronze cougar on the truck bed, around the track).

In the 1980's, my dad taught at BYU, and I have so many great memories of attending BYU games with him and other family members during those "glory years."

My dad tends to get a little emotional when BYU doesn't play well so hopefully, win or lose, they'll at least put up a good fight on Saturday.
