On Twitter, Lisa Wilson is advocating to have yell leaders in every section, inspiring fans to stand throughout the game and coaching them when to be quiet for the offense, etc.
Sorry, Lisa Wilson, I love you but hate this idea on multiple levels.
First and foremost, I think our fanbase is actually pretty good at creating noise at critical moments. Frankly, the only reason the crowd has been lame the past few years is that the team hasn't created many critical moments.
But most importantly, PLEASE let me experience a ball game the way I want with the ticket I paid for.
This isn't a grumbling "sit down" post from a blue-hair. I love a rowdy crowd and I like to join in and create noise at times throughout a ballgame, but PLEASE don't have an annoying guy running up and down the aisles trying to create phony energy and guilting me to stand up. Trust me, it will be every bit as energetic and authentic as the "Costa Vida Wave".
And please don't label me a bad fan because I enjoy football in a different way than others. I understand that some people go for the music and yelling and hopping around... good for them! But like many fans, I attend BYU games to see the nuances of the game...the strategy, the personnel, the play development, the clock management, the chess match. So forgive me if have little desire to scream and stand the entire game.
Those who attend solely for the party will hang around when the team is winning, but drop like flies when the team sucks. Meanwhile, guys like me sat through every miserable second of that 0-3 Utah loss in 10-degree weather (back when Zach was still wearing Ute diapers).
I'm not a bad fan because I like to study most of the game. I'd say I'm a pretty good fan for not missing a home game in nearly 30 years.
Let fans have whatever experience they want and paid for.
