That’s really the only story here. UW is a very good team, verging on elite level. The margin for error for us to win was always going to be very thin.
But we didn’t play clean.
We blew a coverage and gave them an easy TD on the first drive. We committed two unnecessary penalties in a row to give them a chance at another TD, which they cashed in.
And we missed a block that resulted in the scoop and score. That’s most of the difference in the game.
It wasn’t all lucky bounces— these are plays they made or at least plays we didn’t—but that UW game could have gone much differently. In fact I would venture to say that the computers are basically right. If we play those guys 10 times we win 3 or so and if we play clean we win 4. The injury to Ty’Son was so demoralizing, in addition to us not having him available. It hurt bad.
The point is the sky is not falling. The coaches don’t need to be fired. Our kids are playing hard and the schemes are mostly good and getting better.
We have made real progress. We continue to do so. We just need time.
