Eastern Sacramento suburbs would be pretty great for my family. Sacramento itself is a really fun big little city. The cost of living in Sacramento is pretty reasonable, nothing comparable to the other big cities in CA.
There are some amazing things to see and do in the Sierras and at Lake Tahoe to the east. San Francisco and the coast are a short drive to the west. Redding, Lassen, and Shasta are an easy day-trip to the North. Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon are all short drives to the South. These are all world class places to visit, all within easy driving distance.
I’m not sure about schools, but I’ve had several friends live there and loved it. I’ve heard that Davis has terrific schools.
The weather is generally terrific, but the suburbs vary quite a bit as they range quite a bit in elevation. Vacaville and Davis get pretty hot in the summer since they are down in the valley.
I’m not so sure about Vacaville or Davis, but I’d take a hard look at the eastern suburbs of Sacramento.
