Algae Blooms - are we fertilizing our lawns too much?
is the nitrogen & phosphorus impacting local waterways? I was shocked when I subscribed to a lawn service - they must have fertilized 6-8 times during the season. When your sprinklers are on and there is water running down the gutter, I can promise you there is nitrogen runoff, but I don't know how significant it is on a collective basis. I didn't like the thought of 6-8 times a year and cancelled the service. I used to fertilize 4X a year but have dropped my fertilizing to twice a year (pre emergent in the the early spring and once late in the fall). Not sure if it helps decrease the problem, but I wonder sometimes if we mellowed out on our fertilizers if it would be beneficial.

It's like the person that throws their trash out the window of the car. I think if we all try a little bit it can help.
