Diagnose my strange car noise for me
I have an older rear wheel drive beater car that my 16 year old drives back and forth to high school. Last week she said she heard a growling type noise from the rear of the car. It's had a small leak in the rear differential cover, so I pulled that off and cleaned out the differential, and put a new gasket on the cover and refilled the fluid this past weekend. There were no metal shavings in the old fluid, and no gears appeared to be damaged or marred in any way. I'm fairly confident the differential is good to go.

My daughter told me this morning she's still hearing the noise. I just drove the car, and there's definitely a noise that's coming from the mid to rear of the car, especially when you let off the gas. I assume it's either the U joints or possibly a wheel bearing. I don't think it's a wheel bearing because if I put the car in neutral and coast, the noise goes away.

What are other options I'm not thinking of beyond U joints?
