I don’t get your example. Giving up 3 points per drive is a horrible defense. Yes if you have a horrible defense you
will lose. It sounds like you’re proving my point.
Regardless of time of possession, you can’t give up a field goal every time the other team gets the ball.
If you’re giving up 3ppd you’re in the bottom 15 defenses in the country. And it will be a better predictor for your losses than yards or time of possession.

The issue though is field position. Give up drives and then field position is bad, which hurts scoring.
