Both have issues. But giving up yards and TOP is not the problem.
Median Points Per Drive in FBS is 2.12

Toledo offense averages 2.25 PPD in 2019

Our defense held them to 1.6 PPD.

Toledo gives up 2.19 PPD

Our offense scored 1.5 PPD
And one of those three TDs came off of a turnover when Dayan got the muffed punt!

So our defense did significantly better at preventing scoring drives than most do against Toledo and our offense did significantly worse than most.

Same was true against Tennessee and even Utah. 1.6 and 1.7

In 2019 defenses give up 2.89 PPD to Utah’s offense. Our defense gave up 1.7!!! (including the TD where the offense gave them the ball in the red zone) Unfortunately the offense gave up more than that.

The defense hasn’t been able to make up for the offense’s issues, but they’re not the problem.
In 5 games the defense has held the opponent to less than their average PPD 4 times! (Washington meltdown is the exception)
Offense hasn’t once scored an average number of PPD for any opponent.

Bottom line: Points are what matters. Taking opponents into account, the defense is doing a sufficient job of keeping points off the board. The offense is not putting up the points they need to.
