This is a good point. I'd also argue that TOP demonstrates which team is playing
with the lead, since teams that are up big generally run the ball more and burn clock.
That's one reason why I still think that TOP is a useful metric; IMO, aside from a few outliers (like Clemson, Air Raid teams, etc.) significant discrepancies usually demonstrate that one team controlled the game and the other was stuck playing catch-up.

The issue though is field position. Give up drives and then field position is bad, which hurts scoring.
