The NBA and China - Huge Opportunity or Huge Crisis?
While this issue may seem like a crisis to the NBA; I believe they really could have taken advantage of the crisis to their benefit. Here is my logic:
Very few times in history do organizations get presented such a huge opportunity. In the case of the NBA, there is nearly 100% bipartisan support in the USA for standing up to china and standing with Hong Kong and their fight for freedom from oppression.

Imagine if the NBA took a really hard line approach and pulled all business dealings from China and came out with very tough rhetoric around representing the American Values of Individual Rights, and Freedom from Oppressive Government Overreach. How much would this cost them financially? I'm sure it's a lot. Especially when you draw it out over many years. But imagine what this would do for their brand. They could essentially rebuild their entire brand around this one move. They become a symbol of freedom. They become beloved by a much higher percentage of Americans. In fact, I would venture to say that while their market share in China may drop, it would be offset by a much deeper market share in the U.S and globally. Any issues of not being seen as patriotic get erased.

While I clearly don't have the numbers of what is at stake here I can say with confidence that their brand now is taking a major hit. And from a marketing perspective creating a new positive brand overnight that is universally beloved is nearly impossible without the right kind of crisis. They should relish this opportunity.
