I think he was correct. When BYU went independent, I told my friends that it was as big if not bigger mistake than when USU thumbed its nose at the original WAC and said they could go it alone (independent). What happened in subsequent years to USU, and how USU is now performing as a member of the WAC 2.0, is a clear history lesson BYU failed to understand. TCU, Boise and Utah all did or are doing well in the WAC/MWC - and so did BYU. Another case in point, USU’s men’s BB team is ranked as high as 15 in some pre season polls and projected as high as a 6th seed in the dance. Whether they perform or not is not the point, they have respect in the MWC.
I doubt BYU will ever be back in the MWC unless Hawaii or SJSU leave as BYU burned a lot of bridges when it left. And with the angst regarding religious schools, no P5 conference will invite BYU. Indy or going to no sports like BYU-I is the future. And with that, mediocrity will become the new norm. BYU is now the USU of the 80s and 90s
