One of the Church's mission statements is to "make bad men good and good men

better"?  Respectfully, I assume that you're paraphrasing or pulling a quote out of talk. But I don't think that's an official mission statement.  It seems a dsitance from the steps required to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of men.

Which is sort of the problem with so many arguments on CB, misquoting and taking out of context statements by Church authorities to tailor an argument that BYU football is the end all be all of the university and/or the Church's missionary efforts because fans want it to be.  In reality, I think BYU football is right where the Brethren want it to be.  Whether fans want that, is irrelevant to them - they have more important issues to concern themselves with.

The glory days of BYU football happened during a period when the Church's priorities were very U.S.-centric; and more specifically, regionally centric within the mountain west and California.  This meant that BYU football had much greater name recognition and impact within the church membership and within its footprint.  CB has a myopia that ignores how much the church has changed over the last couple of decades.  Many seem unable to grasp how the international nature of the Church means that BYU football's reach has diminished significantly among the membership.

I suspect that the Brethren couldn't care less if BYU becomes a perennial powerhouse or not.  However, they do recognize that BYU football still gets enough press that they proactively make sure that we do not have a repeat of the Crowton-era scandal.  IOW, it seems as though the attention now paid to the program at the highest levels is more in avoiding the negative than building on the positive.  And I doubt that will change.
