Gimmicks ----> success...
Lavell was a forward thinking man. He employed an offense that has now influenced a number of programs in college and the NFL. But at the time it was new. I believe it may be time to lean into something new.

Idea #Uno) Buy into the no punt, onside kick thing. Change the game. If you play the game differently than everyone else, that in itself makes it harder to play against you. This is why Air Force always gives people fits and why it is hard to beat them, no matter how good the other team is. They employ on offense that meets their abilities, and the uniqueness of it means coaches need to essentially retrain their players for one game a year, which is hard to do. The statistics to me are compelling. Lowering your YTG by 25% every down is a substantial advantage in playmaking.

Idea #Dos) Hire an HC who is just a manager and is paid less than his outstanding and proven OC & DC, HC gets paid primarily on bonuses, I wouldn't mind saying: match the bowl payout. Let the OC and the DC be the big dogs and the HC can simply be a tie-breaking vote, and coordinator of egos. HC can be LDS but with the savings in his salary he can go hire proven OCs and DCs that are more than likely going to go be HCs somewhere else. Here is the thing, if you can create an environment where the HC, DC, OC are truly respected and paid on performance rather than hierarchy you might get lucky and develop a staff like Clemson has where the DC and OC have had many opportunities to leave, but choose not to, because they are paid well as coordinators and don't want to coach the other side of the ball. Further, if the OC and DC keep getting hired away simply because they are fantastic then that would mean BYU benefitted from that fantastic coaching. This approach saves you from needing to pay a huge salary to the HC and makes it easier to get better OCs and DCs. Further, it allows you to hire an LDS HC.
