I don't hate our coaching staff.
In fact I really love them and admire them. What I don't like is that they are not prepared to function in the jobs they have been hired to do. They are all great, honorable men. I think in time they could grow into the positions, but BYU didn't really do any of them justice by hiring them to be in their current positions. And I don't think BYU Football has the luxury of time for them to grow into their positions.

Let's start with Kalani. He didn't have any prior head coaching experience. His only meaningful leadership experience was DC at Oregon State which he did not perform very well. It would have been nice for Kalani to go be a head coach at an FCS school first. Being head coach at any school is difficult, but BYU might be the most difficult in the country for the following reasons: 1) Honor code 2) Academic standards 3) Navigating missions 4) Trying to motivate young men who believe in the Gospel of peace to be downright mean and nasty on the field of play 5) Football independence and its scheduling complexities and nothing to really play for 6) Not being in a conference 7) Little support from the sponsoring institution and 8) unrealistic expectations from the fanbase.

Next, let's go to Jeff Grimes. Never been an OC before. Great position coach, no doubt. Trying to run a system at BYU that takes a seasoned quarterback to run. Then you lose that quarterback to injury. Not really having the best players (especially after Taysom and Jamaal left). Not seasoned at Xs and Os (my opinion). Not really able to adapt and make in game changes (due to lack of experience). I think Grimes in time could be really, really good. But he is pretty inexperienced.

Then, let's go to Tuiaki. Elevated from a position coach to a DC. Not much experience at all. Again, I think in time he could be good. But what we have is an inexperienced DC who is slow to make needed changes. And for whatever reason, Kalani doesn't seem to intervene much.

It's just a shame that the three of them are not really prepared right now to be able to lead this team effectively for the kind of schedules we are facing. Man, I have wished for them to be successful. Because I really like all three of them. They are great men. I think they are great for the young men in terms of what they can teach them character wise. But that's not what they are paid to do. They are paid to win football games. I can give them a pass when they lose to good teams like Utah and Washington. It irks me, but it is what it is. I need to lower my expectations. But when they lose to the Toledo's and USF's of the world and give up leads in the fourth quarter. That's what is unacceptable.

What we want to see is improvement. I was very hopeful we would see improvement against Utah this year. But we back slid. I was very hopeful we wouldn't see another UNI or UMass debacle, but then we got Toledo and USF. I was hopeful that even though I expected a loss, that we could hang with Washington and make it a close, entertaining game. We did so for a half, and then the team kind of gave up. I was hopeful that we would see a more disciplined team, but then we saw stupid penalties and players giving up on plays.

I really don't know if there is anyone out there who can turn the program around. But we have to try to find that someone. Before Lavell came, BYU was a basket case of a program. But they found the right guy. Other programs like Nebraska, Texas, USC and Tennessee are dealing with these same type of issues. But they are not settling. The argument that we have to stick with the current coaches because there is nobody else out there is silly. Who knows? Maybe Jay Hill or Paul Peterson is the next Lavell. We can't settle for mediocrity while our rivals and former baby brothers are passing us by.
