Needs to be LDS.
If there were some other staff member (not necessarily a coach, though with a football background (Chad Lewis)) who was more of an ecclesiastical mentor, someone that works as a bridge with players and understanding the honor code (not necessarily a bishop but handles internal or team rules), PR, etc.
Someone that bridges the gap for why BYU needs an LDS guy at the helm.
Ya, I dont know what the relationship would look like between a HC and this proposed position.
But why LDS? Just certain standards? Someone that won't discourage players and recruits from going on a mission?
Why not a coach that agrees to maintain BYU standards, but then have a bridge guy that understands and handles the intricacies of the honor code, LDS culture, missions, etc?
