We recently discussed this with a friend who shared these thoughts...
From my experience a lot of kids get them at age 12. I would say that’s the most common age. I personally try to get as far through junior high as possible. My oldest kids got a phone the Christmas of their 8th grade year. So they only had it one semester in junior high. I am so glad they had to navigate junior high without it!! It opened up their eyes as they were the outsider looking in. They noticed how all their friends were on their phones during lunch. It made them not want to be that way. They saw people change with social media. And they saw drama that would happen in group chats but were never in the thick of it. I know they sometimes felt left out or not in the middle of the social scene but little do they know that’s the BEST thing for them in junior high. That popular social scene is the worst and I’m grateful my kids have been on the peripheral and been able to observe things from a step away.
