FEI ratings show it's not offense vs defense...
They're both really bad:
BYU is 93rd on offense https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/feioff/2019
BYU is 81st on defense https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/feidef/2019
BYU is 104th on special teams https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/feist/2019
Boise St is 57th on offense, 25th on defense and 63rd on ST
Utah State is 110th on offense, 43rd on defense and 61st on ST
San Diego State is 88th on offense, 28th on defense and 70th on ST
It appears that all three teams are very similar with Boise St having a better offense than the two road opponents.
