No, it isn't a good decision. 80% is statistics and just as Trump-esque. That number doesn't account for the personnel of your team. We just botched a 3rd and 1 and had failed in that same situation in the past with the exact scrum play. It doesn't account for where on the field you are either. The reason 80% are successful, because people generally don't QB sneak on their side of the field so the numbers aren't taking into account an opposing D that knows this is for the game.
The better stat is how many QB sneaks were successful in game winning situations.
You don't get the first down and you give the ball up to the BSU offense on your side of the field....much worse than punting it most likely inside the 20.
The same decision burned us against Toledo, but the O got the inches it needed this time. You wouldn't defend the move if it failed.
I've played football all growing up, I'm a coach's son, and with my still limited football knowledge that isn't a smart football decision.
