After watching BYU beat Boise Saturday, I am even more convinced that
the woes of this program are mostly due to the stubborn coaching philosophy that playing a prevent D was the best way to keep games winnable.

It has been hammered home on this board and by past players over and over.

I am excited that BYU won, but at the same time I am miffed that it took them so long to change their philosophy from a prevent D to a pressure D.

I guarantee that Boise would have trucked BYU if BYU played the same defensive philosophy that they played with against, Utah, Washington (both years!!), Toledo, and USF. They lucked out against Tennesse and the philosophy was actually a good one against USC.

The pressure changed the timing for the QB. He had to throw earlier than he wanted and the receivers weren't always ready for the ball to come and dropped passes. They actually got some 3 and outs!!! We saw some punting!!!

They did slip back into the same old philosophy at the end of the game though- playing not to lose.

It also proves to me that while Utah was a good team last year, them coming back in the 4th quarter last year was mostly due to BYU falling back into the prevent D philosophy, not just because Utah is so awesome and that they weren't trying until the second half.

I am all for keeping the current coaches if they can ditch these philosophies that have proven to fail over and over again.

The coaches need to learn how to play against tough teams with a lead. At this point, I would rather have them lose by giving up a big play than playing a prevent D that the opposing team marches up and down the field at will, eating up huge chunks of clock. Here's to hoping that they continue bringing the pressure!
