BYU winning in 1984 caused the bog boys some angst, and likely played a role in the creation of the bowl alliance, bowl coalition, and then the BCS.
But BYU being left out in 1996 and 2001 likely played a role in non-P5 teams gaining some consideration and access to the BCS games.
So BYU probably played a role in both the problem and its solution. (If you believe there has been a solution. I'm not sure what it would take to get a G5 into the playoffs - but I suspect it would be extremely difficult. So "the solution" includes NY6 access, but not necessarily playoff access.)
