We complain about the defense not giving good enough field position, etc. But it really is about preventing the opponent from scoring when they have a drive.
So look at points per drive vs the opponents average. (Per drive because it self-adjusts for differing offensive paces)
Yes it’s nice when the defense can help the offense by giving them better field position, and it’s nice when the offense has long drives to give the defense rest, but points are always the master stat. All others only matter in that they contribute to final score.
Defense has limited the opposition to fewer points per drive than the opponent’s average in every game except UW. Offense done better than average twice now. When offense fixes their problems and doesn’t turn the ball over the team is very good. Even giving up lots of yards. Even with bend but don’t break.
