Romney came to BYU as a walk-on to play with his brother.
I'm sure he knew that there were other QB's BYU had in the pipeline ahead of him - which is why he was getting preferred walk on status instead of a scholarship offer.

I'm assuming that he knew he'd have the chance to compete for playing time - but also knew that the chances weren't great.

He's also had the opportunity to play in spite of being 3rd string. So it's not like he's been buried on the bench and will never see the field.

I just don't think his reason for coming to BYU has changed. If Gunnar decides to go on a mission all of a sudden and won't be there for a couple of years - then maybe I could see transferring. Or if Gunnar becomes all world next year and heads to the NFL early, then maybe he decides he's ready to move on and potentially get some playing time.

But I don't see that anything has changed. He knew coming in he was not the likely starter. And he came anyway to play with his brother.

I'm also pretty skeptical of the "knows he has a chance to be in the NFL" talk. Romney has played very well for an RS freshman. I think he has the potential to have a VERY nice college career and win a lot of games if he were to be starting somewhere. But he hasn't shown the arm strength that the NFL tends to look for. If I was him, I'd focus on getting a degree, having fun, and playing what I can now - but if his focus becomes where should he go to school so that he can get into the NFL, I think he's going to be disappointed.
