Time to vent - I guess I just don't get it
Maybe it's because I don't want to. I'll admit, I've always been a glass half full kind of guy and that's where I'm at with this football team, and especially the defense. The D hasn't been good this year and I think most of us expected better. That said, I want to take a look at the five losses. Yes, I said five because as many have pointed out on this board beating Liberty by 7 was a loss.

Utah- Lost by 18. The offense absolutely gifted the Utes 14 points and pretty much gifted them 20. I don't care if it was bad play on the part of BYU or great play on the part of Utah. The defense did not give up those points.

Washington- Lost by a hundred or something like that. On that particular Saturday we were simply out maned on both sides of the ball. We were not good enough to compete on that day.

Toledo-Lost by 7. Yardage gained by both teams was about equal. The defense, as it has in most games this year gave up way to many yards on the ground. But, in the end, the play that cost BYU the game was the interception. BYU had two possessions near the end of the game where they could have gone down the field and won it.

USF- Lost by 4. Gave the ball up on a fumble and missed a field goal in the fourth quarter. Gained more yards, but yes, once again it was far to easy for them on the ground.

Liberty- Lost by outscoring them by 7. The defense had a horrible first series and gave up a few big plays in the second half. However, the offense had two red zone turnovers (yes, the interception was not really red zone, but it ended up there), at the end of the first half they shot themselves in the foot with holding penalties on two possessions, and in the second half shot themselves in the foot with two penalties on one possession. The offense played well for most of the game but if they could have gotten out of their own way would probably have scored at least 21 more points.

Not to mention that the D getting turnovers were major reasons for the wins against USC and BSU. Tennessee, Zach had an amazing pass at the end that got the Cougs into overtime.

I hate the two stupid losses, but this team is pretty certain to get to 7 wins and I think 8 is a real possibility. Glass half full, nine wins at the end of the bowl game. BTW, if we play Hawaii in the Bowl game that game, in the islands, scares me to death. I'll take 8 or 9 wins. Yes, it should have been 10 or 11 after we were able to beat Tennessee, USC, and Boise.

I just don't get all of the ugliness directed at the defense and the defensive staff. It needs to be better but I really don't think the D has cost us a single game this year. At least not without other aspects of the game giving them some help in doing it.

Sorry for the diatribe, but all of the downers bug me. I suppose I should stay away, but I've been doing message boards for about 20 years. I suppose it entertains me.
