Like others... i have gone through this process (3 times actually)
BYU is BYU and they will do what BYU does...

Mendenhall handled the recruiting of local kids about the same as Kalani. The only difference was the personality of the staff. Kalani is warmer, more open, and 'here are the facts'. Mendenhall was cold, offputting (the other coaches did a better job IMHO) and hammered hard on the religion aspect. During the Mendenhall era, they had 3 mannequins in the football offices at the SAB with a sign that said 'BYU uniforms'... white, navy and a suit with a missionary tag.

My experience with both coaching groups is on par with what everybody else says. They didn't/don't pamper the kids by calling every week like some coaches. They don't mail off a ton of notes/cards/letters (some schools go crazy with this). They do mail off the standard 8.5 x 11 recruiting posters every few weeks... and they don't visit local schools as often as they should.

Both staffs didn't/won't waste time on a kid who isn't interested in BYU.

Mendenhall would tell you to pray about BYU and the lord will tell you its the place you should be.

Kalani tells you how hard BYU is academically and spiritually... he will say it's not right for everybody, but its a special place for those that are up to the challenge.

Mendenhall wouldn't show interest in a kid if they didn't have the grades/academic history.

Kalani goes after kids he wants early (lots of sophomore and jr offers). However, the staff will go 'cold' on a kid if his grades slack off towards the end of high school. They will also go cold on a kid if they don't see the progression they wanted to see (A lot can change from 15 to 18 years of age).
^^^ This has caused a few CB angry posts of the years.

The other BIG issue BYU has to deal with are the missions. They are constantly under a scholarship crunch (have been for years) due to juggling missions. So they offer a lot of PWO's , who then earn scholarships, which then puts them in the crunch again. repeat.

However... over the past decade of going through the BYU recruiting cycle, the biggest issue with BYU recruiting has to be the parents. If you are LDS, and your kid is good at sports... then apparently your kid is perfect for BYU and its a TRAVESTY they are not showing more attention!!!!! It doesn't matter if BYU isn't looking for that position his recruiting class, or that the kid is 4" under the body type BYU looks for or doesn't play the style/technique they want, or that the kid got an 11 on the last ACT test. "He's LDS... BYU should be looking at him more!!!"

The #1 rule when you have a kid being recruited... throw away your fandom, it has absolutely no place in recruiting.
