I said Utah will ebb, and I'm not a Utah fan
And I agree it is all about coaching. I'm just saying that the sad and awful truth is BYU will need a LaVell Edwards like miracle coaching find to get there. There is no sign the BOT will approve the $$$ to hire a top tier coach, and the pool of candidates is extremely small with most good candidates extremely unlikely to come here. We love to talk about Andy Reid coming by some miracle, it isn't ever going to happen ever. I laugh every time I see someone pretend like Mike Leach would even consider here.

So who is that going to be? As I originally said, that coaching candidate likely doesn't exist.

It hurts, I'm not happy about it, but if you look around college football really very FEW programs ebb and flow to the top. A few more than that rise to the top once or for an extended period and then they go to mediocrity.

So until someone can point to an LDS coach out there that both has legit potential to be an elite level (LaVell Edwards) type coach AND would even remotely consider coming here each and every one of you know I'm right. It's a unicorn.

In the meantime I choose to enjoy BYU football for what it is and avoid all the angst many people here go through. I think we can be much better than we are but I see no foreseeable future, particularly as an independent, where we are even in consideration for the CFP.

It's like the pride cycle year after year being like we are in independence. We start out the season playing good teams and finding out we aren't that good and going into despair. Then we get to the latter half of the season where we start beating up on terrible teams and people start acting like next year is going to be special. This leads to insane hype through the off season all back to another early season letdown. Rinse and repeat.

Also I'll add that as long as we remain independent nothing is going to change. I don't want to go back to a G5 conference so it will take another miracle to get into a P5 conference. We need massive movement of some conference to consolidate into 16 teams that forces other conferences to do a land grab to compete.

A friend of mine who is a pretty big donor at the U once told me that Chris Hill spent nearly 20 years cultivating the relationship with the PAC-12 to slip in like they did (and they were lucky to get what they got - we all know the story). I have zero confidence Holmoe could cultivate or negotiate that.
