I understand many of you are upset by my post. I expected that. I just look at
two separate moments in time from Tom Holmoe and wonder what has happened.

In the spring of 2015 Bronco and Holmoe meet. BYU is coming off 3 consecutive 8-5 seasons which has been disappointing. Holmoe informs Bronco that his contract would not be renewed despite a 90-39 record at BYU and that he might be wise to look for other opportunities. Bronco finishes off his last year going 9-4 and finishing with a 99-43 overall record, an average Sagarin of 33 at BYU before leaving for a job at Virginia.

It is summer of 2019 and Holmoe and Sitake meet and Holmoe tells Sitake he needs to be bowl eligible to be extended despite his 20-19 record at BYU. 3 months later we extend Kalani after a 6-4 start and a #49 Sagarin Ranking.

My feelings are not about Bronco or Sitake. They are about winning and losing. Would I like Bronco back? Of course, he won a whole lot more than we are now (Kalani would need to go 73-20 over his next 7+ seasons (10-3 for 7 straight years doesn't quite get it done) to match Bronco). Would I rather have Kyle Whittingham if he won at a higher clip than Bronco or Sitake? Sure. I can learn to love any coach.

But in the Spring of 2015 Holmoe decided BYU could be more. Whether that decision was right or wrong he was reaching for greatness. Now here we are content with less, significantly less.

Are we hopeful for the future? Sure. We were hopeful after the initial 9-4 season, but we were proven wrong by that hope. Maybe Sitake will become a better recruiter. Maybe Sitake will be more disciplined. Maybe Sitake will have more attention to detail. Or maybe, just maybe Sitake will be the guy he has been through 4 years and we will get more mediocre years. More years winning 1 out of every 4 rivalry games. Smart money is on the latter.

Right now we simply have hope and maybes because history says we will be mediocre.
