Final thoughts and then I'll spare you fellas for a few days. I have nothing
against Kalani the man. I don't know him personally but I have no reason to believe he's not a good person. However, based on seeing how he has run this program and his management skills over a 4 year period, I don't think he has what it takes to be a D1 head coach, let alone BYU. I don't think his resume earned him this job and I think his 4 years here have validated that thinking. He's had some locker room issues, I didn't like how he handled Ty Detmer in comparison to how he handles his current coordinators. His in game management is horrific, deer in the headlight, gotta watch the film mentality. I think he's a career coordinator at best and not head coach material.

I think BYU and Holmoe are sold on his PR game and don't hold him to the same standard they did previous coaches who weren't as PR savvy.

I never felt Kalani was on the hot seat. He never was. And that's what bothers me the most. He never saved his job by beating Boise or USU. This extension was coming before the season even started. Had we lost to USU, Boise, Tom still would have extended him after the Liberty, Idaho St, UMASS games. You know it, I know it. His seat was never hot. And that's what bothers me. I look at him hovering at .500 after 4 seasons and I know BYU is better than that. I'm a believer in next man up. I don't care who it is. Jay Hill, Paul Peterson, etc....give them a chance, there are coaches available and you never know. Would they do better? Nobody can say, but it's worth a shot because I'm certain they wouldn't do worse. I'm certain we can bring in the next man up and they are capable of .500 over the next 4 years. But they may just have better management skills and head coaching IQ to get us back to Bronco levels and that's worth it to me. Life is too short for mediocrity. Next man up.

Sadly, we know what Kalani's teams look like. We'll get 4 more years of the same.

The point is, the scoreboard isn't as important as it once was. The BYU admin has decided this is their coach. As long as he can get bowl eligible 3 out of every 4 years all is well.It makes their job easier and it's the BYU (nice) way. Kalani says all the right things and he wears his royal blue hat. Good enough. Sign that check.

If the story is true that Holmoe sat Bronco down and told him three 8 win seasons wasn't cutting it for an extension, after Bronco won 99 games in 11 seasons, then truly a new bar of lower expectations was set today.

And that's tough to stomach for competitive fans.
