Let me clarify. Think everyone ought to know how to do many
things even if someone else normally does it for them. Change a flat tire, cook a meal, do laundry, mow the lawn ... all sorts of necessary activities.

Yes, it’s strange IMO for your MiL to be doing any aspect of your laundry unless she’s there to help with a specific medical situation. If that’s the case, you can either be grateful for the help or do it yourself.
