ChiCityCoug Walk-on
I could be wrong and I am sure IndyCoug has the stats, but it seems to me that

this year has more 9-1 teams than any previous year since the CFP began. It may be because there are a lot of 'new' 9-1 teams that it has become more apparent (i.e. Minn, Baylor, SMU, App State, etc) or maybe these 9-1 teams just haven't played each other yet and will then result in more losses but it is fascinating to see the competition of these programs. I never would have had Minn in my top 10 at the beginning of the year, they weren't even ranked last year!

It has gotten me thinking about the role mentality has in sports. I doubt the talent level at Minn is that much better this year than last year. There may be more experience across positions but it's not like their star ranking from HS increased because of the experience they gained in one year. I also doubt any changes in coaching staff would make that big of a difference. So what is it that made them a potential CFP contender (probably out but still). Was it just that the whole team really bought into it this year more than in years past?

When I was in HS after every workout, practice, and run we would come together as a team and yell on three "State Champs". My sophmore year we did win state and the coaches told us that the seniors that year who won state started the tradition of yelling "State Champs" when they were freshman. There was no doubt in any one of their minds that they could do it and would do it.

On their way to the state finals, they beat (destroyed) private schools who were allowed to recruit and had quite a few former D1 players. But to my knowledge only a couple guys from my HS played in college with only one making it to D1. But this team won each game in the playoffs by more than 3 TDs. So was it just the fact that they bought in as freshman? Was it a mentality thing?

Anyways I love the competition that the CFP has created. It seems like more and more teams are going all in to make the playoffs whereas with the old BCS model I felt it was more rare to have so many nearly undefeated teams.
