Sounds similar to me. I became a fan of BYU as a kid after seeing them play
the UNM Lobos in Albuquerque (football). I liked HOW they played and over the years became intrigued with the team, missionaries, etc.
I had no family connections to the school or Church.
In my case, I did end up joining the Church, went on a mission, and then went to the U where I tried to be a fan there for a couple of years, but it just didn't work.
