Once upon a time, there was a football player named Winchester Beck. Winchester played defensive end and tight end in high school and was All-State. He started his college career as a 6’4” 250 lb DE in a 3-4 defense. His freshman year, he was used as a situational pass rusher, and he was quite effective in that role.
But Winchester wanted to be an every-down player. So his coaches told him he needed to put on weight to handle the every-down rigors required for a 3-4 DE. Winchester put on the weight, but in doing so, he lost the trait that made him effective - his explosiveness. Now, he was just getting swallowed up by offensive linemen every down rather than blowing by them on 3rd downs. By Winchester’s senior year, he wasn’t even a full-time DE anymore. He was playing tight end, which he actually showed quite well at.
So what say you, Cougarboard? Who went wrong and where? Or did things turn out for Winchester the best way they could have?
