ZW has been in the drivers seat now for more than a season and still hasn’t figured it out. He’s still trying to out run pass rushes, taking ugly sacks and running out of bounds behind the LOS (losing significant chunks of yardage) instead of safely throwing the ball away once he leaves the pocket. He actually looks like he’s regressed this season.

The thing with ZW is, he’s an above avg athlete, But he’s not gifted like Taysom Hill or Johnny Manziel. And once he feels the pocket shift from the least amount of pressure he’s like a deer, his tail goes up and he is off and running. At that point his field of vision narrows and he loses sight of everyone except who is right in front of him.

Defenses have figured ZW out and when it’s an obvious passing down (3rd and medium to long) they load up and bring extra pass rushers because they know he’ll panic and get erratic and struggle. In the SDSU game ZW’s completion percentage on 3rd and 4th down was below 50% until that last drive when they were in total prevent. Of the passes he did complete (prior to the last drive) none of them went beyond the mark we needed to get the first down. He also threw 2 picks on those 3rd and 4th down situations. Romney never stops looking downfield and only moves in order to buy a little time for his receivers. He has shown impressive touch in guiding passes over the defense and into nice little windows for his receivers to catch in stride and get yards after the catch.
