Part of the joy you feel when your team finally wins something comes from the memories you have from all the times they lost.
I don't care it you're a Patriots or Red Sox fan (actually, I'm lying - Patriots and Red Sox fans aren't good people), as long as you were a fan of said teams before 2001 and 2004, respectively.
I live and die on the Broncos, Rockies, Avs, and Nuggets (in that order). I shed tears over the Broncos through four Super Bowl blowouts. I watch probably 80-100 Rockies games a year, in spite of them being owned by the Monforts. I kept with the Nuggets through a 10-72 season. (The Avs have had a relative embarrassment of riches since pilfering the team from Quebec, so I can't really complain about them, with a clear conscience.)
Part of that comes with hating the Chiefs, Raiders, Chargers, Giants, Dodgers, Red Wings, and Jazz. I keep a hatred algorithm in a spreadsheet, to remind myself what to be interested in that day. That's character!
