Sometimes we really don't know what people are going through and can be
compassionate.

Earlier this year I was on a 3 hr flight to LAX. I was sitting next to a 50 something lady who had a squirmy 1 year old in her lap. We were in first class.

He was clearly grumpy and was yelling from the moment we were seated. I had planned on working on the flight and slid on my headphones and opened up my tablet while the lady struggled to keep the child in the seat and quiet. Shortly before takeoff, I re-evaluated the situation. I closed Microsoft Word on my tablet and opened up some saved movies my kids watch from Prime Video and asked her if the boy would like to watch some movies.

I spoke to the lady and tried to help entertain the child. We started talking and she told me this was her grandchild. She was going back down to Laguna beach where she worked as a realtor. Her daughter and son in law had died the month prior in a car accident. Unbeknownst to her, her daughter and son in law had named her executor of the will and had named her in the will as being responsible for her son. This came as a complete shock to her.

Since then, she had been frantically traveling back and forth from MT and LA handling the affairs of the deceased family and her business and trying to be a mom for her grandson. It was quite apparent that she needed a helping hand for her grandson on the flight as well as just someone who was willing to listen to her vent. With Prime Video rolling, her grandson was pretty quiet and eventually fell asleep. Sometimes, just a little bit of compassion and understanding can go a long way.
