Christmas Music canon: as much as some don't like "All I Want for Christmas is
You," it is one of the only songs to successfully crack into the Christmas canon.

Maybe over time it will go the way of Grorge Michael's song and become a joke. But even then, Feliz Navidad and Last Christmas technically (or arguably) have cracked into the canon, but they are rare.

Almost all other christmas music is old, written through the 30s, 40s, and 50s...hardly any new Christmas songs have been written to crack into the canon.

Even Mariah Careys song....that was like 25 years ago. No new Christmas songs since then.

And for Mariah Carey (and the song writer) cracking into the Christmas canon will pay in royalties forever and ever.

Early Christmas music from the 30s and 40s are some of the highest grossing and most recorded music of all time...so you see why writers would love to get a new song into the canon, or why artists rerecord classic christmas tunes: it sells and is played for weeks and weeks, on loops every year.
