and the top ranked G5 conference champ gets the 3 spot guarantee similar to the NY6 now. I know that doesn't help BYU any, but both BYU and Notre Dame, and other independents as may be applicable, made the choice to be independent and so have to rely more on voters to get them to the party. I don't see an undefeated or even 1 loss BYU being left out, especially if the schedule keeps going along its current trajectory.
This years playoff would thus be from the week 15 rankings because no conference champ games:
Dec 7 games: Penn St at Oklahoma, Florida at Georgia, Wisconsin at Baylor
re-rank winners
Dec 14: Low rank Dec 7 winner at Ohio St, Utah at Clemson, High rank Dec. 7 winner at Memphis, mid-rank Dec 7 winner at LSU
and so forth using bracket.
Conference champs may be different based on tiebreakers, but I would assume the first tiebreaker would be overall record. You have some pretty good cross conference match-ups that you may never otherwise see even with bowl games.
