My absolute FAVORITE BYU vs. UofU fan "incident".
This was at the rivalry game in LES in 2007.

We'd just gotten to our seats, when a young couple decked out in Utah gear came and sat behind us. I honestly don't remember much being said - they were cordial, we were too. Mostly we kept to ourselves.

A few minutes later a late-middle age couple came in with a kid who had to be late teens or early 20's - all decked out in BYU gear - and sat down next to the young couple of Utah fans. The first words I remember hearing out of this kids mouth were "My goal for this game, is to NOT get in a fight!" He was loud and proud, essentially saying it loud enough that I got the sense he wanted all of us to hear him - I remember chuckling, just a little, at the comment. It really did seem like he was just trying to be funny.

Throughout the game there was generally light-hearted smack talk. Sometimes it was directed at the young couple in Utah gear, sometimes just said aloud for all to hear. Stuff like Utah scored and their band started playing the fight song, and all of the Utah fans stood up, presumably to sing along. I chuckled and made a comment that they were all standing, but no one was singing - because none of them knew the words to the song. The kid in BYU gear took that and ran with it. He stood up, looked around at the different Utah fans that were bouncing to the music, and made a point of telling the young couple they shouldn't feel bad for not knowing the fight song words - because none of the other Utah fans knew it either.

This was a game that BYU won (yeah - it was a few years ago...sigh...) Each time BYU would score, the young kid would jeer the Utah fan couple and tease them about losing. The Utah fan couple would trade funny insults with him, but not as frequently as the young punk. None of it was crude, no bad language was used by either party - but it was persistent.

Early the 4th quarter, after a BYU field goal and some prolonged harassment as BYU had tripled Utah's score (9 to 3 - a high scoring affair this was NOT.) the young couple quietly gathered all of their belongings, excused themselves, and left.

For the first time during the entire game, the young guy in BYU gear sitting behind us was quiet for about 30 seconds. Just as the young Utah fan couple was going through the portal to make their way down the ramp, he turned to the middle-aged couple he had arrived with (who I assume were his parents) and asked "Do you think they'll still come to dinner tomorrow?"

And that's when I realized that the young couple and this kid who had been harassing them all game were ALL FROM THE SAME FAMILY! 🙂

True story - I don't care if you don't believe me. Ha!

This is the biggest reason to celebrate Utah's defeat..... (Bonoman, Dec 10, 2019 at 11:24am)
