What I don’t like (not accusing the OP of this either) is treating religion like it should just be an easy A. Either make it serious and academically rigorous just like any other course, or make it ungraded and optional.

It should just be pass / fail. You have to take them for credit, doesn't impact GPA positively or negatively.
