I think it depends on the kid
Some people want the BYU environment to get away from some of the stupid things high school kids do for entertainment, which continues into college. And some might actually need that environment to excel in there lives. And for those kids BYU isn’t a tough sell.

From a pure football program perspective, Utah has a lot going for them. But a lot of kids don’t choose a schools just based on the quality of the football program, or even end up regretting going to such a program. For example, not every kid offered by Alabama goes to Alabama (like Conover). And some top recruits go to Alabama and never start a game or make the NFL, but if some of those recruits has chosen BYU they could have been starting along with a number of other freshman last year.

So while I agree with you for the most part, a lot of choosing a school is situational and depends on the particular kid.
